90210 Season 1 Episode 1 “We’re Not In Kansas Anymore” recap

The opening scene shows the Wilson family in a red mini van on their way to california from Kansas. They all talk about how moving sucks, and Annie (Shenae Grimes) says she’s lost the most by leaving her boyfriend Jason behind. The Father whose name on the show is Harry Wilson (Rob Estes) reminds everybody that their reason for going there is because his mother (the kids’ grandmother) is getting older, and needs help. They arrive at “Grandma Tabitha’s” (Lucille Bluth) house, and are greeted by her
standing in the driveway with a drink. Right off the bat you can tell the Grandma isn’t too fond of Harry’s wife Debbie (Lori Loughlin) because she basically snubs her when saying hi to everyone. Harry notices his mother has a drink in her hand, and questions her about it, she says its iced tea, he smells it, she says “long island iced tea”. Then she makes a comment about the “crap wagon” parked in her gives her driveway.

That night Annie and Dixon (her brother-Tristan Wilds) are swimming and talking about having to adjust to a new place, and how Dixon is going to have to tell his story all over again about how he’s adopted (he’s black by the way, and the rest of the family is white). Annie tells him its no big deal, and that she just says he’s my brother–Thats her story. The also discuss how Annie made out with some
Guy Ethan (Dustin Milligan) a couple of summers ago, and how he’ll be her new boyfriend.

Annie and Dixon are at West Beverly High School, and Annie makes a remark that its like they’re “at the oscars, and everybody is Scarlett Johanssen”. While they’re walking Annie spots Ethan getting into his suv, Annie asks Dixon if he wants to meet him, he declines, and starts walking to the school. Annie starts walking to Ethan’s suv, he notices her, and he has this shocked look on his face, looks down,
and then this girl pops up from his lap (she was giving him oral obviously). Annie has this shocked look on her face, and walks to school.

Dixon walks into journalism class and is greeted by Navid (Michael Steger) who already knows everything about him since he’s their big reporter there. Moments later they all have to be quiet because Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez (Andrea and Jesse’s daughter from the original series) can deliver the morning news.

Annie is in her first class, and Mr. Matthews (Ryan Eggold) introduces Annie to the class, and asks that Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) show her around. Mr. Matthews also reminds Naomi that she has a paper due tomorrow, or she’ll get an F. She gets all pissy because she has “a lot going on” with planning her sweet 16 party.

Harry (dad/principal) is looking at an old picture of him and Kelly (Jennie Garth) who is a Guidence Counselor at the school.

After class Annie tells Naomi that she doesn’t have to show her around, and then goes starts complaining about Mr. Matthews which winds up winning over Naomi. Naomi then tells Annie that she hasn’t even had time to read the book she’s supposed to do a report on for the following day, and Annie mentions she’s read it, and did a report on it the previous year. They’re then interrupted by
Ethan, and Annie finds out quickly that Naomi is his girlfriend, who consequently wasn’t the one giving him oral earlier. Annie and Ethan acknowledge knowing eachother already because their grandmothers are good friends. Ethan then calls over Adrianna, who is the lead in the school’s musical, Spring Awakening knowing that Annie is into theatre. Annie mentions that she was supposed to be the lead in a musical at the high school she just left, and when asked what it was she lied about the part she was playing saying it was an edgy “rent-ish” type musical instead of her singing “Major-General’s Song” from The Pirates of Penzance which we see a flashback of her doing as she’s telling the lie. Adrianna blows her off after finding out that she’s now helping with the set design at the school, and walks away kind of bitchy.

Ethan and Annie bump into eachother again in the hallway, and Ethan is trying to find out if Annie is going to tell Naomi about what she saw earlier, and Annie says no, and Naomi shows up interrupting their conversation.

Out in the parking lot, Adrianna gets some pills from some guy who tells her he needs the $200 she owes by tomorrow. She doesn’t have it, but promises to get it.

Annie is eating lunch on the steps when Erin Silver (Kelly and David’s half-sister, Jackie and Mel’s daughter) shows up bitching about the band sticker on Annie’s book, and then admits to liking them too, steals her french fries, and sits down beside her. Naomi shows up and pulls Annie away, and tells her that Silver (which is what she likes to be called) has a blog and makes messed up videos of people, and Annie should stay away. Then Naomi invites Annie to her birthday party, but says they’ll need to go shopping first.

Principal Wilson is in his office w/ Kelly, Mr. Matthews, and Naomi’s parents to discuss her having to do the paper thats due the following day. Principal Wilson says that Naomi HAS TO have the paper done, and her father gets mad and says that he’s going to bring this matter to the school board. Before she Naomi’s mom leaves she tells Harry that if things had gone differently, they’d be discussing their
own kid, which means they used to be an item.

Nat is still at the Peach Pit, but it’s a coffeehouse now instead of a diner. Annie and Naomi discuss how much Naomi loves Ethan, and Annie wouldn’t let Naomi buy her an $800 dress. Naomi freaks out when she gets texted from her mother telling her that she has to do the paper tonight. Annie mentions that she has her old paper on the same book, and offers to e-mail it to Naomi to “get some ideas” for her paper.

Dixon is trying out for the lacrosse team, and the coach (Mr. Matthews) tells Dixon he’s on the first team, and demotes another player named George. As everybody is walking off the field George pushes Dixon, and Dixon pushes him back, and they start fighting. Mr. Matthews wasn’t looking at the time, so he has no idea who started it, but the guys on the team saw who started it.

The Wilson family is eating a dinner when Grandma gives Dixon some advice on how to win a fight. she tells him to “grab onto those jewels and twist them like a garbage bag.” Harry tells his son to control his temper, and Grandma pipes in again and says that this was “racially motivated”. Harry says he’ll talk to the coach, and figure out what happened. Annie then changes the subject, and asks for permission
to go to Naomi’s party, and gets it.

Dixon and Annie are laying in a bed talking and Annie confides what she saw Ethan doing in the parking lot that morning. Dixon says that Ethan doesn’t really want to be with Naomi, even though she’s beautiful, because she’s probably a pain in the ass.

Naomi, Ethan, and Adrianna go to a club. Adrianna notices the wad of cash Naomi pulls out of her purse to pay the cover charge. While at t the bar, Naomi runs into Mr. Matthews at the bar, and he mentions she should be home since she has a paper due. She says she’s done, and as Mr. Matthews is walking away he tells the bartender not to serve her since Naomi is underage.

Naomi’s mother shows up at the Wilson’s house to reminisce about their past with Harry and his wife. After she’s noticably intoxicated after drinking a bottle of wine Harry tries to get her to leave, but not before she makes a comment, and then Harry’s wife Debbie makes one back causing her to get her stuff and leave.

Annie shows off her party dress to her parents. Her grandmother says that you could crack an egg on Annie’s ass, and grandma knows this, because Ricardo Montalban did that to her in her back in the day. Harry tries to get Annie to wear a less revealing dress, and Grandma calls him “Jedidiah the Amish Farmer” then tells him to go churn some butter.

While at the club, Ethan tells Naomi about how George is pressuring him to say that Dixon started their fight. Naomi tells Ethan that she doesn’t understand why he would lie for someone he doesn’t like, and Ethan tells her that she’s not into anything like a team sport, so she wouldn’t understand. He storms off, she follows, and gives Adrianna the opportunity to steal Naomi’s purse–which she does.

The next morning Annie is showing up at school, and everybody is mooing at her. She doesn’t understand why until Dixon and Navid show up, and Navid shows her a video Silver made on his laptop.

Naomi and Adrianna walk by discussing about how both of their purses were stolen from the club the night before. Annie goes up to Silver to ask her why she made the video, and Silver tells her she was pissed because she left her to go hang out with Naomi. Annie explains that Naomi pulled her away to talk, and that she didn’t do it to be rude.

Ethan goes to Mr. Wilson’s office and tells him and Mr. Matthews that Dixon started the fight with George. Mr. Wilson knows he’s lying, but accepts it because there’s no proof, and this causes him to kick Dixon off the team.

Dixon is worried about what will happen if he can’t stay on the team, and tells Annie that lacrosse is how him and his father bond. Annie reminds him that he’s been with their family for eight years, and they have a lot to bond over.

Annie see’s Ethan and yells at him for lying about the fight with her brother and George. She says that she wonders what has happened to him, since he used to be “frighteningly honest” when she met him 2 summers ago.

Naomi is in Mr. Matthews class and reads her book report to the class, and Annie notices that she copied her paper word for word. After class Annie tells Naomi that what she did was wrong, and that she gave it to her to get ideas, but Naomi says it’s not a big deal. Naomi then tries to make it up to her by giving Annie the dress she wanted that she couldn’t afford.

Annie and Silver are at rehearsal watching Adrianna when the director says the singing is lacking, and Silver suggests Annie join them, and does. The director likes what she see’s/hears and tells Annie she’s part of the musical. Then her father shows up pissed off with Naomi’s essay she turned in that
he knows was Annie’s work.

Dixon is sitting thinking about sending Naomi a text to tell her about how Ethan cheated on her to get back at him for telling Mr. Wilson that he started the fight with George.

Naomi and Annie are sitting at the principal’s outer office, and Naomi is pissed at Annie for telling her dad, and disinvites her to her birthday party.

In the parking lot, George asks Ethan if Dixon was crying, Ethan is annoyed, and they start pushing each other around.

Principal Wilson meets with Naomi and her mother, and her mother says that her schoolwork isnt important since she’s not going to Yale like her sister Jen. Principal Wilson then talks to Naomi and tells her that he thinks she can do it despite what anybody else says, and gives her a pencil and
paper to write the essay.

Silver tells Annie she’s sorry, and hopes that getting her into the musical that it would get them to be friends again. Annie see’s Ethan all beat up, and Ethan tells her to tell Dixon he’s back on the team.

Annie goes home to tell Dixon the good news, and Dixon tells her that he already sent Naomi the text about Ethan cheating on her.

Harry and Debbie are cuddling on the couch. They’re talking about how it might be unfair letting Dixon go to the party after getting into a fight, but only Annie got grounded. They decide to let Annie go, and when they go to tell her they find out from Grandma that she already left.

Annie, Dixon, and Navid are at the party looking for Ethan to tell him about what Dixon did. Navid finds out that Naomi and Adrianna’s purses were “stolen”, so that mean that Naomi never got the text. They stop looking for Ethan. Then Adrianna shows up with Naomi’s purse and hands it to her and tells her it was found at the Pit.

Harry shows up at the party to look for Annie, but bumps into Naomi’s mother. Then Naomi’s mother tells Harry that when he left she found out that she was pregnant with his child, and asked why he never contacted her again. He told her that her mother said she went away to europe for the summer, and she said that she didn’t. Anyway, she tells him that they had a son together, and he was floored, and walks away.

While Naomi is reading the text from Dixon her father is introducing her and Ethan for a dance. They meet up on the dance floor and she asks him if he cheated on her, and he can’t respond, and she walks away.

Annie realizes what happened, and Silver asks her if she wants to go to a “real” party, and they go to a beach party. Apparently Ethan is the fastest man in the world because he’s at the beach, in a wet suit, and surfing. They start to talk and he’s not mad, and says he wants to change.

Harry is in bed with Debbie thinking about what Naomi’s mother had told him. Meanwhile, Kelly is on the phone with someone and says “He’s been asking about you.” She’s then interrupted when her son comes in, and says he can’t sleep. She hangs up with the person, and takes her son on her lap in a rocking chair and starts to rock him.

Adrianna gets more pills from her dealer.

Ethan goes to Naomi’s, and she lets him in.

Annie, Dixon, Navid, and Silver run into the ocean and frolic around in the water.

My personal thoughts on the show are that the show seems promising, but its not like the original–which could be good or bad depending on the rest of the season. I look forward to seeing how things develop. I’m intrigued especially by the inference that Kelly and Brandon had a kid, and that Andrea and Jesse’s kid Hannah is at west beverly high school, but they’re not around so far, and from what I’ve read the actress who played Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris) isn’t interested…yet.
