Family Guy Season 7 Episode 7.02 “I Dream of Jesus” Recap

I Dream of Jesus begins at the Nifty Fifties Diner. The entire Griffin family is there, Peter,Brian,Stewie,Chris,Meg, and Lois. Lois informs the kids that there is a lot of history in those fifties diners. They were very popular in the 80′s. Our first flashback of the night is of Peter trying to decide if he has enough time to poop before his guest arrive: Do I have time? Peter ponders, as he begins to make his way for his “poop” the doorbell rings. Peter says: “Son of a bitch, looks like I’m going to have to pile dinner on top of that” as he answers the doors to a friendly: “hey guys how are ya?”

Back at the diner Peter is going over the menu. Peter tells the kids that they don’t serve any of this 1950′s food anymore, then begins to ramble off some food from the fifties they don’t serve anymore: “Hamburgers, French Fries Cokes” Peter laughs, pats Chris on the head an tells the kids they don’t know what he’s talking about. Lois notices that Cleveland as made it: “Oh,hey there Griffin’s” Cleveland waves, and is plowed with water from a fire hose, handled by police officers, as the blast takes him out of the restaurant, with watch dogs also at their side, outside of the restaurant, Cleveland says “Oh, that takes me back”.

On the jukebox, we here “Oh now everybody’s heard, about the bird” Peter with hands on his face,”oh my god this is surfin bird by the trashmen” It’s his favorite song of all time. Peter gets up, starts singing the song, and dancing to it. He’s found his new fetish of the episode. The Bird IS the word. Chris don’t you know, about the bird? Meg, everybody knows that the bird is the word; Hey guy behind the counter, the bird is the word;hey frightened child, the bird is the word. Peter goes to the women’s rest room, opens the door: “Hey,lady on the toilet the bird is the word” Hey don’t you know about the bird? Lady from the restroom: Sure, everybody knows that the bird is the word. Stewie is clapping, loving this, he wants it all over again. An employee walks over to the jukebox, he pulls the record from the box, Peter isn’t happy. The employee tells him that the song is from the 1960′s, and shouldn’t be in the jukebox, Peter ask if he can have the record; he offers the guy sex with his daughter, the guy wants to know who his daughter is, Peter glances at Meg, then quickly finds some other chick at the counter, and says she’s his daughter.

Eventually Peter takes the record home, and begins playing it, singing and dancing to it non-stop. His doing so has drove the entire Griffin family nuts. At one point in the kitchen Stewie was sitting with a revolver in his mouth. While it was funny to see Stewie doing so, he didn’t pull the trigger. Thankfully Peter hasn’t drove Stewie to kill himself just yet. Brian and Stewie have had enough of this, and together they plot to take the record and destroy it. They eventually get ahold of the record, and Stewie stomps it with his foot, while Brian takes a baseball bat and beats it. Peter then ventures out to get a new copy if the record, and to stop the agonizing singing and dancing Peter from bringing them to boredom once again Brian and Stewie, go to every record store and purchase every copy of the record.

Peter finally finds a record store, and the clerk at the store reminds Peter of somebody he’s known. Jesus Christ. The clerk tries to tell Peter than he isn’t Jesus, but Peter insist on having Jesus come to his house for dinner, and so Peter befriends Jesus. Peter even gets “Jesus” and award on MTV, how cool is that? There was a scene where Jesus walks atop water in a fountain but with Peter being Peter, he stole the glory and messed that up. (In dramatic Peter Griffin fashion.) Eventually “Jesus” lets the fame of being “Jesus” get to him; and he winds up getting put behind bars. Jesus calls Peter from jail to bail him out, Peter refuses to bail Jesus out of jail until he uses his powers to bash a lamp over Peter’s face. Jesus decides it’s time for him to leave earth, but before he goes; he gives Peter a gift from “Jesus” a fresh new copy of SURFIN BIRD much to the dismay of the Griffin family.

I personally enjoyed this episode. I do not think it has been the funniest Family Guy episode I’ve ever seen, but it’s a good enough one for me. I think the religious comedy is something they played out pretty well without over doing it and pissing people off.
